WILLOW CREEK — As demand for guided river experiences on the Mattawamkeag River continues to grow, Northwoods Outfitters has launched a paddling guide certification program designed to train local residents for the emerging profession.
The eight-week course, developed in partnership with the Maine Professional Guides Association, covers water safety, trip planning, basic river rescue, natural history interpretation, and customer service. The first cohort of eight trainees began classes Monday at Northwoods’ River Road headquarters.
“Three years ago, we ran maybe a dozen guided trips all season,” said Julia Chen, owner of Northwoods Outfitters. “Last year, we ran 47 and turned away another 25 because we didn’t have enough guides. The demand is there. We need the people.”
Trainees include a retired teacher, a college student home for the summer, and two former mill workers looking to transition into the tourism economy. Upon completion, graduates will be eligible for Maine guide licensure and guaranteed seasonal employment with Northwoods.
Stu Peller, who employed two of the trainees at the mill before the scaleback in 2022, said the program represents the kind of workforce transition Willow Creek needs. “Not everyone who lost mill work can retrain for healthcare or tech,” Peller said. “But they know the river. They know the woods. Guiding is a natural fit.”
Tuition for the program is $400, with scholarships available through a grant from the Maine Community Foundation.
